"NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Homeowner's Guide to Underground Heating Oil Tanks"
Typical Above Ground Home Heating Oil Tank System
For proper delivery service, a tank should not be installed more than 80 feet from your driveway. This helps alleviate any problems of reaching the tank during the winter season.
All propane tanks must be:
- a minimum of 10 feet from any part of a structure, deck, storage shed, property line, air conditioning unit, electric meter, or any source of ignition.
- a maximum of 80 feet from a driveway.
An underground propane tank must be:
- located in an area free of vehicular traffic and snow plowing in order to protect the dome of the tank.
- installed in an area 12'L x 5'W x 5'D (500 gallon)
- installed in an area 18'L x 5'W x 5'D (1000 gallon)

Propane Tank Leaks
A disagreeable odor (similar to rotten eggs) is added to propane so that you will be able to detect the smell easily in case a leak develops.
DO...
1) Extinguish all smoking materials and any other open flames or sources of ignition.
2) Get everyone outside and away from the building.
3) Shut off the gas supply at the tank.
4) Call your propane supplier from a neighbor’s phone. If you cannot reach your supplier, call the fire department.
5) Stay outside and leave the gas off until the leak has been fixed.
DO NOT...
1) Turn light switches, appliances or thermostats on or off, and do not use the telephone. A spark from one of these could ignite the gas.
2) Light or try to re-light any appliances. Leave this job to your propane supplier.
3) Re-enter the building, until the problem has been corrected.
